Masks may Have prevented many of Covid-19 cases: Study

The new infection rate fell by 3% per day when mask-wearing in New York, researchers said.

Mask-wearing is important for preventing the spread of the virus than social distancing and stay at home orders, researchers said, in the study published in PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

"These protective measures alone significantly reduced the number of infections that is, by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and over 66,000 in New York City from April 17 to May 9," Researchers calculated.

The precautions like social distancing, quarantine, isolation, and hand sanitizing were followed in all places in Italy and New York City. But they only helped in minimum of virus transmission by direct contact, while face covering it helps prevent airborne transmission.

Masks can reduce the growth rate of coronavirus infection by 40%, a paper on the impact of the staggered use of masks in public places in different cities and municipalities in Germany has found.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study says that at least 28% of 40,184 people who tested positive for Covid-19 between January 22 and April 30 in India were asymptomatic.

Wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent the individual from contracting any airborne transmission.
